Recently, a joint delegation from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Hong Kong College of Surgeons conducted a routine re-evaluation visit to the MRCS certification base of general surgery in Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. Rowan Parks, Chair of the Edinburgh School of Surgery, Ian Hawthron, Vice Chair of the Hong Kong College of Surgeons, Dantu Zhang, Chief Assessment Officer, Xiuqun Zhu; Tienyin Wong, Vice Provost and Director of the Tsinghua Medicine; Guoxin Li, Medical Director of Tsinghua University; Fang Liu, Director of Educaiton Office of School of Clinical Medicine and Director of Educantion Department of Bejing Tsinghua Changung Hospital; Chunmei Song, Vice minister of Education Department; Luo Bin, Project Leader of MRCS and Director of general surgery, training tutors and trainees participated in the review.
Tienyin Wong gave a welcome speech to the jury and delivered a keynote speech on the medical strategy of Tsinghua University. He pointed out the necessity and urgency of developing Tsinghua Medicine from the aspects of discipline construction, people's health needs, domestic and international influence. He stressed that Tsinghua Medicine must train doctors for the future, and that young doctors need a wide range of disciplines, especially training in health informatics, data science, biomedical engineering and AI. He pointed out the importance of incorporating international residency training standards in the future medical education model, and Tsinghua University will also support the recruitment of more international students and teachers to enhance its global influence.
Bin Luo introduced the progress and achievements of the hospital in medical work, discipline construction, teaching staff, resident training and specialist training, focusing on the training content of the training base for residents and the current training situation of trainees, as well as the implementation of training courses and process assessment in the case of differences with the Commonwealth physician training system.
Hairuo Long, a trainee and gastrointestinal surgeon, shared the training experience of participating in the MRCS program and the experience of participating in the MRCS examination.
At the meeting, the jury talked with the students and tutors, and asked the students in detail about their work, training, support and preparation for the examination. After the closed-door review of the delegation, Rowan Parks gave a summary and feedback on behalf of the visiting experts. He fully affirmed the operation of the MRCS project in our hospital, and gave an "excellent" general review opinion, hoping that the project could recruit more doctors to participate in the future. Guoxin Li thanked the experts on behalf of the hospital, and said that the hospital would make improvements according to the experts' suggestions, increase support in the future, and actively encourage young doctors to participate in the project.
In 2020, the Department of General Surgery of our hospital was accredited as the training base for certified surgeons of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, and strictly trained according to the tutorial of the Hong Kong College of Surgeons. Nine young Surgeons from Clinical School of Medicine of Tsinghua University were selected to participate in the MRCS training program. After passing the first part of the examination, the surgeons will be awarded the Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). After the second stage of training, they can achieve the standard of Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS).
